The Lava Trees Of Hawaii

When hot lava from a volcanic eruption invades a forest, often the lava does not overthrow the larger trees, but flows around them. The moisture in the tree cools the lava in contact with the trunk and a hard exterior shell is formed. As the lava drains away, only the solidified “lava trees” are left standing. The tremendous heat burns away the wood inside and a hollow cast in the shape of the original tree is left behind. In some cases, the tree can remain standing and stays for years as a black charred skeleton, and in rare cases, some trees even survive and continue to grow after the eruption.

Incredible Photos Of A Family That Lived With A Pet Lion

No matter how much we love the wild animals, we may never truly understand how their minds work. A trip to Africa by actress Tipi Hedren, Noel Marshal, her husband and actress Melanie Griffith their daughter, made them want to create a movie on lions. This was after some advice by an animal trainer named Ron Oxley, who told them that “to get to know about lions, you’ve got to live with them for a while.” The family started living with Neil the lion and Michael Rougier, Life photographer, documented their life.

Fate can sometimes lead us to paths we never intended to follow and this is what happened to Collen Kelton. He got a transfer with the US military to Misawa, Honshu in Japan and after settling down with his girlfriend, decided to buy  a Nissan Skyline R33 GTR. His plan was to modify and customize it into a purple model. Two unsuccessful attempts later, he settled for his second least favorite color and bought a 1995 silver model. He intended to upgrade the vehicle’s interior and spray the exterior purple in a ‘Time Attack’ style, as he referred to it.

Think how social media can stop terror: PM Modi tells Zuckerberg

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday discussed the use of social media in checking terror activities and a host of other issues with social networking giant Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The issues discussed included 'Swachh Bharat' Mission with the Facebook co-founder.

Zuckerberg, who called on the Prime Minister, expressed his interest in working with the government in the areas of healthcare and education.

The Prime Minister pointed out that lots of terrorist elements are using social media platforms to recruit members, according to an official statement.

"This is unfortunate and we need to think of the role the social media can play to stop terror," Modi said.

Facebook will extend help in developing the Clean India Mobile App that would be launched soon.

"This would give a strong impetus to the Swachh Bharat Mission," the statement said.

They discussed a wide range of issues revolving around the innovative use of Facebook as a platform to engage with a large audience in the service of humanity, the statement said.

They also talked about the Digital India initiative and the Prime Minister asked Zuckerberg to identify some domains of Digital India where Facebook can get involved and help.

Facebook chief said that he is extremely excited about the Digital India initiative of the Government of India.

Modi recalled how he used social media during campaigns such as tracking the missing children, during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and how it gave wonderful results.

The Prime Minister appealed to Zuckerberg to promote India's rich tourism potential through Facebook.

He asked Facebook to look at how to enhance Internet literacy along with Internet connectivity.

Earlier in the day, the Facebook CEO met Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Zuckerberg is the third high profile CEO of a US-based firm, after Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Microsoft's Satya Nadella, to visit India in last few days.

London’s New Folding Bridge Opens And Closes Like A Fan.

http://www.ubfact.com/architect/londons-new-folding-bridge-opens-and-closes-like-a-fan/

British firm Knight Architects and structural engineers AKT have designed and completed a new moving footbridge in Paddington, London, that opens and closes like the blades of a traditional Japanese hand-held fan. The bridge consist of five steel beams, stabilized with counterweights, that rise and fall in sequence to create a fan-like effect. The first rises to 70 degrees, while the last lifts high enough to create a clearance space of two and a half meters over the surface of the canal over which it spans. The bridge is three meters across and straddles a 20-meter width of the Grand Union Canal in Paddington Basin, close to Thomas Heatherwick’s Rolling Bridge that curls into a ball.
The architects, who specialize in bridge design, won a limited competition to design the crossing in 2012 with their plans for a “kinetic sculpture” that could rise to allow canal boats to pass along the waterway.

Study Finds Out Whether Running Barefoot is Better

There is no denying that not everyone would gladly remove their shoes and stay barefoot. These could be due to various reasons, like black soles, hairy toes and generally if your feet are ugly. At this point, you should make sure they are covered in socks too. The only people allowed to walk barefoot would be hobbits, but maybe not. Shoes are good and are not the problem here: they keep our feet warm, protect them and sometimes they look cool on us.

ISRO, NASA set to jointly explore Mars

Isro, Nasa set to jointly explore Mars. This means that finally top US space agency has started taking ISRO seriously.

New York Times ran a very disappointing cartoon showing India trying to knock at a door. Behind the door two serious looking white old men were talking among themselves. The ones inside the room were shown to be US and Russia, space super powers that were unwilling to allow India enter the select space club. India was represented by a farmer in traditional north Indian clothes and a somber looking cow.

India vs Pakistan: Trial by fire in Asian Games hockey final

Tactics in India-Pakistan games always seem to fall apart as the emotions take hold and everyone reverts back to just run and gun. I feel it's not going to change on the big day today. This rivalry is something else.

There is an old saying: 'the hottest fire makes the hardest sword.' Today is trial by fire for India and Pakistan, and there is no getting away from the pressure.

Intricate Ice Crack Patterns On Lake Puma Yumko

intrcate ice patternLake Puma Yumco, located on the Tibetan Plateau, is one of the most remote lakes in the world. The lake is 32 km long and 13 km wide and is situated at an altitude of 5,030 meters above sea level. The lake is fed by melting water from the snow-capped surrounding mountains, but it has no outlet. Despite this, the nutrient concentrations in both the water column and lake sediments are extremely low, a condition known as UltraOligotrophy. Water in such lakes tends to be blue to blue-green and to have high clarity due to low levels of photosynthesizing organisms such as phytoplankton. The lake appears bright blue when viewed from above the earth. Indeed, the name Puma Yumco literally means “The Blue Jewel which is floating in the sky”.

Mina The City Of Tents

Mina is a small city located inside a low lying valley in the province of Makkh, in western Saudi Arabia, about 8 km to the east of the Holy city of Mecca. Inside the 20 square km valley, tents cover every open space, as far as the eye can see, neatly arranged, row after row. It is in these tents Hajj pilgrims stay overnight during the five days of each Haj season. For the rest of the year, Mina remains pretty much deserted.

There are more than 100,000 air-conditioned tents in Mina providing temporary accommodation to 3 million pilgrims. The tents measure 8 meters by 8 meters and are constructed of fiberglass coated with Teflon in order to ensure high resistance to fire. Originally pilgrims brought their own tents which they would erect in the flat plains of Mina. After Hajj is over, the tents would be dismantled, everything packed and taken back. Then sometime in the 1990s, the Saudi government installed permanent cotton tents relieving pilgrims of the burden of having to carry their own camping equipment. But after a massive fire that swept through the tent city killing nearly 350 pilgrims in 1997, the current permanent fire-proof city was built.

Cherry Blossom Stones.

In the Japanese city of Kameoka, which lies just over the western mountains of Kyoto city, an intriguing geological oddity is found. It’s a small subhexagonal-shaped stone of fine-grained muscovite mica hosted on a type of metamorphic rock called Hornfels. When cracked open, their internal cross-sections look like tiny golden-pink flowers. They are called “cherry blossom stones”, after the revered flower of Japan and one of the most recognized icons of the country.
“These flower patterns weren’t always made of mica,” explains Science Alert. “They started their existence as a complex matrix of six prism-shaped crystal deposits of a magnesium-iron-aluminium composite called cordierite, radiating out from a single dumbbell-shaped crystal made from a magnesium-aluminium-silicate composite called indialite in the centre.”

Soak In Wine, Green Tea, Coffee Or Sake At Yunessun Spa Resort.

spa resort in japanBathing in water is such old school. At Yunessun Spa Resort in Hakone, Japan, you can soak yourself in a variety of unorthodox liquids such as green tea, coffee, wine and sake, all in the name of health and well being. Each of the different pools has different health benefits, so they say. For instance, a sake bath has the potential to remove freckles and age spots, while green tea picked from the mountains of Tanzawa and Hakone, can boost skin health and the immune system. Bathing in wine is considered rejuvenating for the body, and it has been said that the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, frequently did it. Yunessun has a few more traditional spas as well, including a couple of themed baths such as one resembling an ancient Roman bath.
A 3.6 m wine bottle lies by the side of an outdoor pool filled with red wine. Red wine contains resveratol, an antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental damage, so fresh red wine is poured into the pool daily. While soaking in wine, bathers also enjoy a drink or two

Spectacular Picture Of Laser Guide Star System.

laser light from earth to sateliteImaging stars and other heavenly bodies from earth based telescope is difficult because of the atmosphere that envelops the earth. The atmosphere acts as veil between the distant sky and the telescope, and that veil is dense, disturbing and unpredictably variable. This causes fluctuations in the brightness of the star as it refracts through different layers of the atmosphere. The effect is that we get a smeared image of the star instead of a bright point of light.
To measure how the Earth’s atmosphere is changing astronomers monitor fluctuations in brightness of a known bright star, but many times no bright star exists in the direction where atmospheric information is needed. To solve this problem, an artificial guide star is created. A beam of laser is projected up through the atmosphere. At about 100 km, the laser beam hits a layer of sodium atoms created by micrometeorites, which vaporize as they enter the upper atmosphere, and excites the sodium atoms. The excited atoms emit a yellow light in all directions, creating a glowing guide star in the upper atmosphere which the astronomer uses to carry measurements.
The blurring effect of the atmosphere is then compensated by employing a special kind of rapidly flexing mirror, a technique known as adaptive optics.

The Stilt Fisherman In Srilanka.

fishermanStilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka, located off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. Although the approach looks primitive and ancient, stilt fishing is actually a recent tradition.
The practice is believed to have started during World War II when food shortages and overcrowded fishing spots prompted some clever men to try fishing on the water. At first they started fishing from wrecks of capsized ships and downed aircraft, then some began erecting their stilts in coral reefs. The skills were then passed on to at least two generations of fishermen living along a 30 km stretch of southern shore between the towns of Unawatuna and Weligama.

Ayami Cemani:A Rare Chicken Breed In The World.

Ayam CemaniBlack is not an uncommon color in the animal world; bears are black, gorillas are black, there are breeds of dogs and cats that are black. But this Indonesian chicken breed known as Ayam Cemani takes ‘black’ into an entirely different realm. The black color of Ayam Cemani is not limited to its feathers – the color is all over and even on the inside. Everything about this chicken is black – skin, beak, plume, tongue, legs, toe nails, even its meat, bones, and organs. Even bone marrow is black. Their blood, although not black, is very dark colored. Ayam Cemani is so spectacular and exotic that it is referred to as the “Lamborghini of poultry.”
The word ‘Ayam’ means ‘chicken’ in Indonesian, and ‘Cemani’ translates to ‘completely black’ in Javanese. This exotic breed originated from Java in Indonesia. They were introduced to Europe in 1998 by a Dutch breeder, where they drew considerable interest amongst poultry enthusiasts due to its looks and genetic make up. Ayam Cemani is one of the most expensive chickens in the world with a single bird costing up to $2,500.

For three years, the Seattle-based photographer and a small crew of cinematographers have been filming the albatross living and breeding on the island of Midway Atoll, in the Pacific, more than 2,400 miles from Alaska. The birds, which normally feed on squid and other animals that swim near the surface of the water at night, have instead been accidentally swallowing pieces of floating plastic, often mistaking them for food, that now litter the world’s oceans. The birds then return to the island, regurgitate the plastic and feed it to their young.
